In this line of job, you could be priming the fitness levels of a sports celebrity, or helping society shed its flab in this era of indulgence and indolence.

The National Sports Medicine Center in Chennai offers an entry-level course for trainers and physiotherapists in the sports and fitness industry.

The one-year ‘Diploma in Sports Therapy and Training’ is conducted in the distance education format, in association with the Southern College of Technology, the Chennai affiliate of the UGC-recognised Vinayaka Mission University.

The UGC-approved course is also internationally recognised and equips sports therapists and sports and fitness trainers with the latest specialised knowledge in the field. It also includes scientific aspects such as anatomy, physiology and sports psychology. According to Madhu Thottappillil, sports medicine specialist at the Center, the course will involve participating in and designing of practical sports sessions, group seminars and private study.

As part of the course, candidates will be assigned to various professional teams in different sports and undergo practical training in state-of-the-art equipment in select fitness centres.
